We are pleased to invite you to the Eighth Annual Humanitarian Conference organized by Webster University, Geneva under the Auspices of the Government of Geneva: THE ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL CONSEQUENCES OF HUMANITARIAN CRISES 27-28 March 2003 at the International Conference Center of Geneva, 15, rue Varembé. Most of the major humanitarian crises of the last ten years have been "man-made" crises, the result of fragile or oppressive political structures. While they were primarily political in their nature, and humanitarian in their immediate consequences, without exception they have had a deep and lasting negative impact on the economy and on the social fabric of the countries concerned. The conference will focus on three key issues. Firstly, need for material and human resources and the costs of humanitarian action. Secondly, the impact on the economy and on the social fabric of the societies, from the Great Lakes Region to Afghanistan, from Palestine to the Gulf. And thirdly, the costs of rebuilding peaceful, stable, efficient, and in most cases multiethnic societies. The subject of the conference was selected in the spring of 2002. Today, in view of the Iraqi situation and the ongoing protracted crises in many parts of the world, the subject of this year's Webster humanitarian conference has become even more urgent and topical. As in previous years, the conference will be organized with the support and participation of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the International Committee of the Red Cross, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, as well as other governmental and non-governmental organizations. We shall also benefit from the support of the Geneva Foundation. The conference will be open both to experts and the general public. The keynote speakers will be Jakob KELLENBERGER, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross and Mr. Didier CHERPITEL, Secretary General of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. There will be altogether 25 distinguished speakers from 18 major organizations. We hope that you and/or your associates will be able to participate in this important meeting and discussion.
