Another one: The Contender (Hollywood film dir. Rod Lurie, 2000), with Joan Allen and Gary Oldman: in an early sequence, the male presidential candidate, a governor, fails to save a woman from drowning when her car runs off into the water (shades of Chappaquiddick). Except--oops--as we later find out, he arranged her accident so he could save her. She drowns--which we see at some length. This is not the only "drowning people in a car" scene I've seen in the last few years but I can't think what the others are. Anybody remember? (btw there's a great poem by Susan Hankla about her family drowning in a car as she climbs out, "The Air is getting thin.") Best, Jann
