Other good examples include THE ABYSS (Cameron, 1986) and BLOW OUT (De Palma, 1981).

Night Moves (Penn, 1975) features an underwater scene where a downed airplane
with a victim aboard is found--not exactly a drowning scene but phenomenal
underwater camerawork in the aftermath of a drowning.
