I just mean it sets up a set of references that concern travel to 'other worlds' (literary and filmic) that the rebels use as metaphors for Neo's own journey. Cypher says the line, and Morpheus a few moments before has just said Neo must feel like ALice tumbling down the rabbit hole. These are metaphors that are in fact confused as the rebels should really consider the matrix to be fantasy (Oz, Wonderland) and thus where Neo is headed the hellish real world (Kansas, Victorian England). My point being that what they say is actually meaningless, its just about setting up feelings that such references will create - of dislocation, fanstasy and escape - without actually having a system of meaning. -----Original Message----- From: Film-Philosophy Salon [mailto:[log in to unmask]]On Behalf Of panayiotis mina Sent: 29 March 2003 14:19 To: Matt Crowder Subject: Re: matrix reply Cipher turns to Neo and informs him that "Kansas - >is going bye-bye", echoing Morpheus assessment that Neo must feel like >Alice >falling down the rabbit hole and inviting him to stay in Wonderland. Um...isnt 'Kansas is going bye-bye' a refference to the wizard of oz ? alice and her druggie rabbit friends have nothing to do with it. _________________________________________________________________ Add photos to your e-mail with MSN 8.
