There's a certain closeness in some documentaries that blur that distinction between reflexive and another the Nichols categories: interactive. In both categories the filmmaking aparatus are somewhat foregrounded within the texts. However the defining difference is that in interactive mode the filmaking process never turns against and questions its own 'manipulative' existence within the relationship. So Nick Broomfield, Victroria Mapplebeck and Michael Moore (Roger & Me) though appearing on camera with their apparatus exposed, interacting with their subject, do so only to be shown to delve and problematise the chase, rather than to call the chase itself into question. Again Nightcleaners I feel fits comfortably within the relfexive mode. Tony Richards Lectuer Media Production University of Lincoln
