Subject: Day conference on Broadcasting in the Arab World

Dear Colleagues,

The Communication and Media Research Institute (CAMRI) is organising a=20
one day conference on

"Broadcasting in the Arab World:  Challenges and Prospects"

Date: Tuesday, 10 June 2003,

Venue: University of Westminster, 309 Regent Street, London W1.

The conference aims to bring together academics and practioners in the
field to discuss the repercussions of satellite development on Arab
broadcasting and the new public sphere in the making. The conference =
will
also address the war coverage in Iraq from the perspective of different
broadcasting channels.

The main themes the conference will address are:
1- The changing world of Arab broadcasting: including structure,
technologies, regulations, and the connection between broadcasting and
development.

2- Arab media audiences: discussing the status of audience research in=20
the Arab world and in the diaspora.

3- Are we witnessing an Arab public sphere in the making?  Discussion of
the role of Al-Jazeera channel and others in providing this free space
where audiences express their views freely and exchange ideas on a =
global
scale.

4- War Coverage: Looking into the various ways Al-Jazeera, CNN and the=20
BBC cover the Palestianian Israeli conflict and the war in Iraq.

The conference will be of interest to academics, journalists, students,
diplomats and others concerned about developments in the Arab media.
