As far as I can ascertain, The Matrix is not and never was regarded by critics as an especially acute or 'philosophical' work. I regard this as closely related to intellectual fashion, rather than genuine philosophical enquiry. Since when has Film/Cultural studies been concerned with metaphysics? Since when has it ever incorporated an enquiry into reality such as the metaphysics of Gnosticism? If you regard those kind of ideas as superficial and intellectually weak (and decidedly unfashionable), you will then regard The Matrix as no more than a cutesy and populist work. I'm not convinced the directors actually *were* seriously interested in or presenting those ideas - although that's what they claimed - but the integrity of the ideas remain. Regardless of fashion, and the limitations of conventional intellectual parameters. __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo!
