I'd also have to agree that there's been quite a few "post-apocalyptic movies" in general before _Mad Max II_. _The Time Mashine_ (1960) would be another example. I do think however that _Waterworld_, _Reign of Fire_ and _The Postman_ more or less take their lead directly form the success of the _Mad Max_ movies. _The Crow_ which I overlooked in my first post doesn't fit the category very well at all, as Jim has noted.
