SCHOOL OF HISTORY

RESEARCH ASSISTANT

Salary: £ 18-20,000 per annum

A one-year post is available in the area of toponymics (place-name studies) to work with Dr Simon Taylor on the completion and production of a four-volume publication on the place-names of Fife. The post, which is to start on 1 February 2004 or as soon as possible thereafter, is to be funded by the Marjorie Anderson Medieval Scottish Research Fund. You should have a first degree which has involved any of the disciplines necessary for working with place-names in Scotland: e.g. archaeology, environmental history, languages (Celtic and/or Insular Germanic), medieval history. It is important also to have had some experience in working with medieval sources, and to be able to read charter-Latin. An interest in and understanding of the basics of toponymics will be an advantage, as will experience in publication.
