Dear All, My name is Elvira Haeussler, and I am a registered blind member of staff at Dewsbury College. The proper title of my post is WONDER 2 Project Manager/Co-ordinater, which basically means I am managing a project aimed at increasing the number of disabled students taking up further and higher education, with particular emphasis on visually impaired people. The bulk of my work at the moment, however, is taking up by networking with disability officers (or whatever they call themselves in the various institutions, at colleges in West Yorkshire, and local disability organisations in order to start up a sort of information exchange between the different interested parties. As part of this, I am eventually hoping to roll out a training program in disability awareness and/or using JAWS for Windows. This will go out to staff at Dewsbury College, and to other colleges and businesses in the area. I have just joined this group because I think this might be the easiest and quickest way of getting through to you all, particularly those of you living and working in West and South Yorkshire. If you know about any service, specialist product or support group for disabled students or people with disabilities in general, work for a local college and want to tell me what your arrangements are, or have any questions on any of the above, including any issues of learning support, please feel free to contact me. I am really pleased to have become a member of this discussion group, and am looking forward to some animated email discussions with you all.
