European Commission adopts Recommendation to promote public wireless
broadband services in Europe (20/03/03)
The European Commission adopted today a recommendation that calls upon
Member States to facilitate the use of Radio Local Area Networks (R-LAN) for
accessing public services. The Recommendation encourages Member States to
allow deployment of public R-LAN access networks without sector specific
conditions and subject only to general authorisations. The Commission
thereby implements the policy objective set by the European Council to
foster multiple broadband access platforms in support of the Information
Society.

European public libraries results consolidated at landmark conference
(20/03/03)
On 13 and 14 March 2003, the PULMAN policy conference on  "Public Libraries,
Museums and Archives Working Together in eEurope" was held in Oeiras,
Portugal. Some 170 participants from 41 countries agreed to four cornerstone
priorities and a ten-point action plan laid out in the Oeiras Manifesto, the
PULMAN agenda for eEurope.  Commissioner Erkki Liikanen, attending the
conference, saw it as "a key event for public libraries in Europe, setting
the scene for exciting developments in the years to come".
The Manifesto underlines the vital role of public libraries, seen as vital
in the progress of the information society, for meeting the needs of
citizens in the information age and encourages cooperation at local level
with the other cultural institutions.

Risk Management & Humanitarian Demining In 6th RTD Framework Programme
Conference Centre Albert Borschette, Brussels
An open workshop will take place to inform prospective participants in the
area of Improving Risk Management in Framework Programme 6 (FP6). This theme
forms section 2.3.2.9 of the 2003-2004 work-programme.  It will be addressed
in the second call of FP6 which opens in June and closes in October 2003.

Mr. Colasanti, Director General of DG INFSO, will attend DigiWorld on March
25 in Brussels. This event presents the state of the digital world and its
main trends during the last 12 months.
DigiWorld is a one-volume publication that gathers analysis and key
indicators for the telecom, internet and media industries.
