ScienceDirect Librarian Services

It seems some time ago now, but at the Online 2002 exhibition in December of
last year I visited the large Elsevier stand to ask some questions about the
ScienceDirect service. The ScienceDirect people were extremely helpful, and
I not only came away with some useful promotional items, but they also later
sent me a supply of their leaflets and some pens, for distribution to staff
and students. At the stand, it was Wendy Gaurii who showed me a section of
the ScienceDirect site I hadn't noticed before, called Librarian Services
http://www.info.sciencedirect.com/librarian_help/index.shtml (note: you will
not be able to link to this site unless your institution or organisation
subscribes to ScienceDirect, as does Heriot Watt University).

ScienceDirect is very heavily used at Heriot Watt University, and the
Librarian Services section contains quite a bit of useful information for
those who provide support for the service.

This includes: "10 ways to get the best out of ScienceDirect" which gives
details of how to add the Scirus search box to a site, links to printable
user guides (9 different ones are available), information on SD Connect
(bi-monthly librarian newsletter), and such like.

There is a link to ScienceDirect Usage Reports information and login. There
is information about how to link directly to the issue page of a particular
journal within ScienceDirect, plus information on how to use shortcut URLs
which enable you to quickly "jump" to a specific area in ScienceDirect, such
as the Database page, the Reference Works page and the My Alerts page. Also
to be found is information on journal cover images and using ScienceDirect
logos, and also a ScienceDirect FAQ..

Sweden.se offers a representative collection of the extensive range of
information that is available on Sweden on the Internet. Sweden.se
principally comprises three gateways. One provides direct access to the
information about Sweden produced by the organizations that are directly
responsible for providing information about Sweden to the outside world.
Their fact sheets, publications, films, slide presentations etc. are listed
jointly on the site to enable visitors to find the answers to their
questions about Sweden quickly and easily. The second gateway is a link
collection for access to these organizations and to over 2000 Swedish
government agencies and NGOs on the Internet. The idea is for visitors to be
able to find and access without delay the organization that has the
information they are seeking. The third gateway is aimed at helping visitors
keep updated on current issues and events.

NICE WEB SITE
In the course of finding sites of interest for this Newsletter, we sometimes
come across Web sites which we feel deserve slightly more than a passing
mention. Each month we will pick out one or more such sites, and give them a
short review. The sites will normally be UK based, may be small or large,
and be of interest or potential interest to academics. After lengthy
discussions we have decided, with incredible creativity :-), to call these:
Nice Web Sites. Details of previous Nice Web Sites are available in the Nice
Web Site Archive.

Education UK

**** Eighth International Summer School on the Digital Library ****

http://www.ticer.nl/summer03/index.htm

In the summer of 2003, the International Summer School on the Digital
Library will be held for the eighth year in a row. This year, the Summer
School will consist of three courses that will be held at Tilburg
University, the Netherlands, right after the IFLA Conference in Berlin.
Every year, the Summer School is updated to respond to the most recent
developments.

Course 1: Leaders' Visions on the Library of the Future
(Tilburg, 11 August - 12 August 2003)
This new course aims to discuss and develop visions for the future, thus
enabling library managers to anticipate trends when developing their
strategic plans and library policies.

Course 2: Change: Making it Happen in your Library
(Tilburg, 13 August - 15 August)
The course aims to identify new opportunities for libraries, to support
librarians in developing a vision, and to provide librarians with tools to
initiate a change in their own organisation.

Course 3: Libraries, Electronic Resources, and Electronic Publishing
(Tilburg, 25 August - 27 August)
The course is designed for library managers/directors, IT or systems
librarians, licensing officers, and digital library project managers from
academic and research libraries. The course is highly relevant for
publishers.

Many international experts will present lectures and case studies.

Group discussions and workshops will enable participants to apply the new
information to their own situation. A detailed programme is available via
Ticer's website: http://www.ticer.nl/summer03.

The Summer School will be organised by Ticer B.V. (Tilburg Innovation Centre
for Electronic Resources) in co-operation with Tilburg University, the
European University Institute in Italy and the University of Leeds in the
UK.

**** New Resource Guides ****

Technical advances and the continued growth of the range of available
resources mean that, more than ever, institutions and users need to be able
to access information, advice and support in the use of these resources. The
Resource Guide initiative provides an important means of making a sometimes
confusing information landscape manageable and comprehensible for our users.

Developed for the UK higher education community, the Resource Guides take a
subject based approach to raising awareness of relevant electronic resources
through providing both online and printed guides to key resources. These
guides give an overview of the JISC collection of electronic resources
relevant to each subject area and, where appropriate, complementary
resources and initiatives, which fit within the Resource Guide Scope Policy,
are included.

Each guide has an associated Resource Guide Adviser (RGA) who collaborates
with JISC services, partner organisations, publishers, and other bodies to
produce the Resource Guides and to promote the key resources to their
subject communities. The RGAs will offer a variety of awareness raising and
training activities - providing a co-ordinating role that brings staff and
students in higher education a variety of free activities tailored to suit
their needs.

The Resource Guides are a UK wide, JISC funded, initiative covering 7
subject areas - broadly in line with the subject areas of the RDN
(www.rdn.ac.uk), and the LTSN centres (www.ltsn.ac.uk)

Arts and Humanities: Emma Beer
Engineering, Mathematics and Computing: Sarah Kelly
Geography and the Environment: Adam Gardner
Health and Life Sciences: Jo Badge
Hospitality, Leisure, Sport and Tourism: Theresa Summerfield
Physical Sciences: Gillian Sinclair
Social Sciences: Helen Wharam

The Resource Guides have already proved popular with staff and students in
the Social Sciences and Arts and Humanities, and have gained a reputation
for providing a user-friendly approach to navigating the labyrinth of
resources on offer by providing a manageable and digestible overview of
available resources. Now available in 5 further subject areas, not only will
staff and students now have a single point of reference for resources within
their subject areas, but expert advisers too - helping make sense of the
environment for them, and pointing them in the right direction.

**** JISC and NSF to collaborate on major digital initiative ****

The JISC (Joint Information Systems Committee) and the US National Science
Foundation (NSF) have agreed to fund a programme which will provide exciting
new content and a range of benefits to education sectors on both sides of
the Atlantic. The five-year programme, called 'Digital Libraries in the
Classroom' will cost around #6m ($9.5m) and will draw on best practice in
the creation and delivery of content from both the UK and the US, resulting
in a range of resources in four key subject areas.

The focus of the programme is to investigate and exploit the potential of
online resources in learning and teaching across a range of pre-selected
subject disciplines. But a key focus for each of the projects across the
programme will be to combine the application of sound pedagogic principles
in the creation, delivery and use of online materials, with new research to
develop the underlying information technology . The result will be resources
that will provide exemplars for the provision of digital resources in
disciplines beyond the ones chosen for development.

Malcolm Read, JISC Executive Secretary, welcomed the new programme, saying:
"The JISC and the NSF have a long history of collaboration, but this is a
particularly exciting programme which will bring a number of important
benefits on both sides of the Atlantic."

The programme consists of four projects, each of which will pool the
resources and expertise of British and US Universities with long and
distinguished track records in the use of information and communication
technologies. The projects are:

*The Spoken Word*
New resources for transforming teaching and learning - Glasgow Caledonian
University, Northwestern University, Michigan State University

*Teaching and Learning Anthropology*
Using 'scalable' digital library platforms and innovations in approaches to
content - London School of Economics and Columbia University

*Digital Libraries in Support of Innovative Approaches to Teaching and
Learning in Geography*
University of Southampton, University of Leeds, University of California,
Santa Barbara, and University of Pennsylvania

*Accelerating Globally Distributed Team Innovation*
University of Strathclyde and Stanford University

BOOK REVIEW
Review of:

Implementing Digital Reference Services: Setting standards and making it
real
edited by R David Lankes, Charles R McClure and Abby S Kasowitz
Facet Publishing, 2003
ISBN: 1-85604-462-9
#45

Implementing Digital Reference Services is a collection of papers from the
Third Annual Virtual Regerence Desk (VRD) Digital Reference Conference held
12-13 November 2001 in Orlando, Florida, USA.

"What a difference a year makes. Just last year the term digital reference
had little meaning for many librarians. Few would disagree that the
profession has been transformed by technology that has in some ways made us
compete with our own users, many of whom think they no longer need the
services and expertise of librarians "

So begins this book, which goes on to study in depth just what these changes
mean for libraries and librarians. It is split into six parts. Part one
provides two in depth case studies (one from a museum library, one from
government) on identifying the need for digital reference services. Part Two
covers the management of digital reference; Part Three: real-time digital
reference services; Part Four: collaborative reference initiatives; Part
Five: research in digital reference; and Part Six evaluating digital
reference.

The papers are written in a way which makes them easy to understand. There
is techical information, but this is heavily backed up by concrete examples
and case studies with clear explanations of pros and cons; what works and
doesn t work and why; and the issues surrounding change within libraries. So
even with chapters which I found initially off-putting as a non-techie type,
I found myself becoming interested in them on reading.

This book will be of great interest to anyone working in libraries at the
moment, and dealing with the fast paced changes in the way users are wishing
to accessing reference materials and services.
