Workshop on Practical Aspects of Developing AI-Based Systems

Call For Participation

A workshop exploring practical issues in developing and fielding AI-
based systems will be held on 15 December 2003, in conjunction
with AI-2003: the 23rd Annual International Conference of the
British Computer Society's Specialist Group on Artificial
Intelligence, at Peterhouse College, Cambridge, UK.

This half-day workshop will form part of a wider piece of non-
commercial research that aims to capture best practice in the
development and fielding of AI-based systems. If successful, the
results will be made generally available to the AI community.
Further details are at http://www.ai-research.org.uk.

The workshop will take the form of a number of short paper
presentations highlighting critical issues in this domain, followed by
a structured discussion which would aim to identify and document
the most significant issues in the development of successful AI-
based systems.

The workshop will address practical, mainly non-technical, issues
relating to the development of AI-based systems, including, but not
limited to:
· Differences between AI-based systems and "conventional"
systems
· Choice of Technology
· Transition from research to production
· Marketing
· Project management
· Gaining funding
· Criteria for success/failure
· V&V
· Issues relating to safety-, security- and mission-critical systems
· Reasons for failure (Design and Definition, Decision Making,
Project Discipline, Supplier Management, People)

Papers on any of the topics above will be welcomed, and will be
assessed by the organisers on their value in developing
understanding and best practice in AI-based system development.
All accepted papers will be distributed to workshop participants
and posted on the AI research website. Selected papers will be
presented at the workshop.

Those wishing to submit papers should email Richard Ellis
([log in to unmask]) with an abstract. The deadline for
complete papers, in Word or pdf format, will be Friday 14th
November 2003. All workshop participants must register for at least
the first day of AI-2003, as specified on the AI-2003 website
(www.bcs-sgai.org/ai2003).
