The Working Group Against Racism In Children's Resources is providing a series of workshops aimed at RE-SPIRITING pupils and parents.

1. SPIRITED PUPILS
Aimed at pupils aged 13-18 either excluded/ at risk of exclusion
     or
interested in knowing how best to safeguard themselves from exclusion from school/college,
by looking at
African History
Black British identity and culture
Exploring some positive and inspiring statistics about Black people in Britain today
AND
Examining the facts and statistics regarding exclusion from school using real life case studies
ALSO
Looking at own responses to difficult situations and identifying best methods for the future.

Government statistics show that pupils of African origin are still four times more likely to be excluded from school and are not sharing in the national rise in attainment.
We aim to bring to pupils an encouraging approach to education which shows an understanding of the environment in which they live, learn and grow. The workshops are non-judgemental or accusational of pupils, families, cultures, religions or institutions. Pupils will be able to explore their concerns and arrive at a position of ownership of their  educational career.

These workshops are being offered free of charge to supplementary schools, Learning Support Units ( in schools) Pupil Referral Units and all Community groups.

2. SPIRITED PARENTS

These workshops are for parents of school aged children. The workshops aim to examine the exclusions process and parents rights and responsibilities.
Also to look at available resources and support for excluded pupils.
The focus will be on empowering and strengthening parents in their ability both deal with the exclusion process and reclaim a healthy life style and family relationships. To recognise that there is life and hope after exclusion from school.

3. SPIRITED PARENTS AND PUPILS

This workshop aims to repair relationships between parents and pupils. Often the experience has been long and drawn out. Both pupils and parents can become frustrated. During the process much is documented in the school file which is damaging to both parents and pupils.
The workshops aims to bring understanding of both perspectives and build a way forward.
