RESOURCE ARCHIVES TASK FORCE E-BULLETIN 4

Archives Task Force: report of fourth meeting

Commissioned by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, the Archives
Task Force is Resource's major archives project for 2002/2003. The
Archives Task Force will report to the DCMS in winter 2003.

The fourth meeting of the Task Force was held on 21st May at The
National Archives, Kew. The venue provided Task Force members with an
opportunity to see both the public face of The National Archives and
behind the scenes. The Task Force considered papers on the following
topics:

*       Education, training and development;
*       Archives, active citizenship and social capital;
* Regional and national consultation: emerging findings of the ATF
of the consultation programme - a call to action.

Papers presented to the meeting and minutes of previous meetings are
available on the Resource website. To view these pages please see
www.resource.gov.uk <http://www.resource.gov.uk/> and follow the links
to "Archives Task Force" from the "action" drop-down menu.

Consultation phase

The last of the consultation meetings took place on 30 May in Belfast.
All of the events have been well attended with over 500 practitioners,
users, managers, councillors and other stakeholders taking the
opportunity to feed in their views. A first stage summary of outcomes
form the consultation process was presented to the Task Force at their
fourth meeting on 21st May. The ATF support team are now in the process
of pulling together the meeting notes to prepare a national overview
that will be submitted to the Archives Task Force. All papers will
appear on the Resource website and the notes of the individual meetings
will also be available for the Regional Archive Councils and Regional
Agencies.

On behalf of the Task Force, Resource has undertaken a substantial
mailing to over 2,000 institutions, societies and organisations with an
interest in the archive domain. This looks at some emerging viewpoints,
and 10 key questions across the issues of:

* A new vision for UK archives

* Making archives and records management relevant

*          Seizing the digital opportunity

*          Training and skills

*          Partnerships for success

We appreciate that these are broad issues, but they are the areas around
which the Archives Task Force has concentrated its thinking, based on
feedback from the archive sector. If you would like to take this
opportunity to respond to the Task Force a copy of the letter is
available on the Resource website or a hard copy is available from Mrs
Batool Khan on archivestaskforce@resource <mailto:batool.khan@resource>
or telephone 020 7273 1465. The consultation period for this written
exercise closes on 1st August 2003. All comments will be acknowledged.
