Beningn Idiopathic hyperphosphatasaemia of infancy - well recognised
phenomenon.

Subject: Raised Alkaline phosphatase in 18 month old

An 18 month year old presented to Paeds as "unwell". An Alk Phos of 5797 U/L
and an Iron of 3 umol/l were found as the only abnormalities (Normal LFTs,
U/E, calcium, PO4). I think the child was born in Nigeria, and thought the
Alk Phos represented Vit D deficiency, but the 25 OH Vit D was normal. The
child was started on Iron, and 7 weeks later the Iron is 15 umol/l, and the
Alk Phos is 368U/L, which would be considered normal for the age. Any ideas
as to why the Alk Phos was so elevated 7 weeks previously, resolved so
quickly, and the only interventional medication was Iron?
