After starting out with all the extreme measures that go with suspected
Lassa or Ebola virus infection, which are in the line of the measures stated
in the CDC guidelines ( <http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/sars/lab.htm>
http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/sars/lab.htm ), the infection committee of our
hospital, headed by the Corona virus expert Prof. W. Spaan, decided (as SARS
turned out to be caused by a corona virus), that standard safety precautions
to avoid HIV or Hepatitis B infection are sufficient when handling blood or
urine for routine clinical chemistry and hematology. This is also the
essence of the guidelines in (
<http://www.phls.org.uk/topics_az/SARS/Clinical_guidance.htm>
http://www.phls.org.uk/topics_az/SARS/Clinical_guidance.htm ). The only
extra precaution that is taken, is that all samples from patients
(suspected) with SARS are desinfected externally before leaving the patients
room.
Right now news comes in that the clinical picture of SARS is shifting
towards gastro intestinal infection, which may prompt us to handle feaces
and urine with extra care ?!!

These and other guidelines seem to mainly cover taking appropriate
micro/viro specimens and subsequent handling up to the point of setting up
tests. We are trying to work out what to do about ABG's, for example:
sampling into the analyser can sometimes be a bit messy, and is disposal of
the sample mixed with machine solutions OK if continued as usual? Should lab
staff doing ABG's wear more protective clothing than usual?
I'd like to hear other's views/questions.
