Francois Villon's (1430-1460) Ballade pour prier Notre-Dame begins with :
Dame du ciel, régente terrienne,
Emperière des infernaux palus,
...
Lady of the sky, earthly regent,
Empress of the infernal marshes,
...
I wonder if Notre Dame was commonly defined or painted or sung elsewhere than in Villon's ballad in relation with a representation of Hell as a swamp during the Middle Ages. What can be understood from Villon's description is that Notre Dame reigns over the three Antiquity worlds : Heaven, Earth and Infierno. But is this symbolic representation a common "cliché" in the medieval arts and profane and/or religious literature ?
Looking forward,
