With apologies for cross-posting Another chance to see... REVEALed ; the truth behind the National Database of Resources in Accessible Formats. A joint seminar organised by the CILIP Cataloguing and Indexing Group, UKOLN and the National Library for the Blind. * Date: Tuesday 18th February 2003 * Time: 14:00 - 16:30 * Place: Bristol Museum and Art Gallery, Queen's Rd, Bristol. The feedback from the earlier versions of this seminar was that it is useful both for staff involved in Access issues for Visually Impaired People but also for cataloguers and the managers of both groups who can have an influence in where effort and resources are put. Seminar programme 14.00 Introduction and Background. This will set the Reveal project in context by briefly looking at the problems posed by library and information provision for visually impaired people. This provision is for the most part voluntary sector funded and run, but with little integration, no national strategy and an under-resourced and incomplete union catalogue. The new national strategy (Reveal) will be described with details of the plans to launch an improved web-based union catalogue and associated additional resources. 14.30 Standards and the system. This will look at the bibliographic standards to be used by Reveal (M21 and LCSH) and the need for additional data on content and on fiction titles (e.g. GSAFD) for visually impaired users. These requirements, together with the need to support the voluntary sector and to enable access via access technology for end users, have an impact on the specification for and final choice of the library management system and web-based OPAC. 15.15 tea break 15.30 The Collection Register. This will look at a useful tool in a field where resources are spread widely. It will describe the collection record format, the fields and data held and the different interfaces for searching and data creation. This will be followed by an on-line demonstration of the Register. The session will end with a brief review of progress so far on the project and the timetable for remaining work. 16.15 Closing summary (It is intended that there will be time for questions after each section.)
