It is perhaps worth noting that in his important book on 'Euthanasia'
 in Germany, Michael Burleigh includes an important caution (p.
294) about 'psychohistory over coffee and cake with mass
murderers', arguing that the some of the writing on this topic (e.g.
Robert Jay Lifton's work) is of dubious quality to say the least.

further details.

Burleigh's own book is, in my view, excellently researched, and at
the same time acknowledges all of the appropriate limitations. It
also points to many other good sources of information (particularly
if you can read German).
