RGS-IBG Annual Conference 2003
Venue: 1 Kensington Gore, London
Date: Weds 3 - Friday 5 September

DARG sponsored session: Children and Youth in Developing Areas

Convened by Nicola Ansell and Lorraine Young, Brunel University

There has been a burgeoning of geographical research with children and
youth in developing areas over the past few years, which has been
fuelled from two directions. First, geography's engagement with the new
social studies of childhood, as represented by the recent Limited Life
Working Party on Children, Youth and Families. Second, a growing
awareness among the 'development community' that 'development' has
often bypassed the interests and views of young people. The aim of this
session is to bring together researchers concerned with investigating
young people's social/cultural/political geographies with those
principally working in areas which impact on the lives of children and
youth including: demography; health; refugee studies; and environmental
hazards.

CALL FOR PAPERS:

Please send titles and abstracts of 150-200 words to the conveners by
21st February. Decisions on the programme will be made by mid-March.

Papers from the session will be considered for publication in a special
issue of the new journal 'Children's Geographies' (subject to normal
review procedures).
