The first line of verse four, "-'e smells most awful vile' ", recalls a school lecturer telling how the Roman army fighting Boadicea, upset the British chariot horses by parading camels up and down in front of the Roman lines. The strange strong smells of the camels so disturbing the attacking chariot horses that they refused to charge home. Can anyone confirm this? I cannot find any referance to the Roman Army using camels. Horses, mules, oxen, even elephants yes, but they must have used camels a universal beast of burden, help please?. regards Richard Haythornthwaite.
