Dear Roger and all,

If you toss the search terms "camels", "Roman", and "Britain" into a search
engine such as google, you'll find many references to Claudius' use of camels
and elephants in Britain on the way to Colchester (Camelodonum), although it
seems to be more of a "triumph" than anything else--i.e., they don't appear
to have been used in battle.  Perhaps this was done to scare/impress the
locals, who tended to scare them right back with their, um, blue battle
array.
