medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture Dear Shahrzad > This year, I am beginning my research on the "Suffering Body" in the Middle > Ages. And I have begun with a detailed analysis of the meaning of disease in > different versions of the story of Tristan and Iseut. A similar story which you may like to look at is Robert Henryson (died 1506) "The Testament of Cresseid". This was written as a deliberate sequel to Chaucer's "Troilus & Cressida" (c. 1386). In it, the faithless Cressida ends up as a leprous prostitute sitting by the roadside when her betrayed lover rides past and fails to recognise her. I believe that in the MA leprosy was considered a venereal disease.
