I had an enquirer who said that he had heard that the 2001 UK Census was done as a result of EU legislation.

As we have had one every 10 years for the last 200 years and the Census Order 2000 which set down the rules for the 2001 census refers to an Act of Parliament from 1920, I said that it wasn't.

He then went on to ask if there was any EU legislation on the taking of censuses.  I can't find anything, but wanted to check with you all in case I have missed anything.

He then wanted to know where he could find out what each individual EU countries' legislation/practice is on censuses.  Any ideas?  Is there anywhere an organisation which studies censuses, like the one at Reading which looks at referenda?

As always - grateful for any suggestions!
