GOTHIC: ART FOR ENGLAND c.1400-1547

CALL FOR PAPERS FOR A 3-DAY CONFERENCE AT THE VICTORIA & ALBERT MUSEUM, NOVEMBER 21 - 23, 2003

A three-day conference is being planned to coincide with the major Victoria and Albert Museum exhibition, GOTHIC: ART FOR ENGLAND c.1400-1547, 9 October 2003 - 18 January 2004. It will be the first time that an exhibition devoted solely to this period will have taken place and it follows on from the great series of exhibitions devoted to English medieval art held in London during the 1980s. It differs from its predecessors in that it encompasses works of art imported from abroad or commissioned from artists and craftsmen resident on the Continent, as well as indigenous output. The exhibits will be arranged under the themes of Royalty, War & Chivalry, Patrons (the Beauchamps and the Nevilles, Henry Chichele and Richard Fox, Lady Margaret Beaufort), City & Town, The Household, Church & People, and Death & Commemoration.

For the conference we are inviting submission of papers on art and architecture of the period c.1400-1547 produced for English patrons or the English market. They may be thematic, conceptual or on individual works of art. New discoveries or re-evaluations resulting from recent research and/or conservation are particularly welcome. Papers will be considered from art/architectural historians, archaeologists and other scholars whose interests include visual culture of the period. Titles and abstracts (200-300 words) must be submitted by 31 January 2003. Each speaker will be limited to 25 minutes; longer versions of papers may be considered if the conference proceedings are published (as is intended). All speakers will be paid a fee. Those from outside London will be able to claim travel expenses.
