medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture I confess. I said I *thought* population rather than territorial sprawl determined a diocese. For example, I live in AZ and if I'm not mistaken the entire state is one diocese, that of Phoenix. Surely someone on this list must have a definitive answer to this? I'm willing to bet that Nevada, Alaska, Wyoming also have one diocese per state, whereas Montana with a large Catholic population *probably* has more. I'll try to find out. It stands to reason that if there are 40 Catholics in a state the size of, say, Texas, it makes sense to put them in someone else's diocese rather than have one bishop looking after 40 souls. MG p.s. I bet you'd look great in a tiara and veil. --- Christopher Crockett <[log in to unmask]> wrote: > medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval > religion and culture > > Marjorie Greene <[log in to unmask]> wrote: > > >BTW it's the Green Guide I'm using not the "bleu." > > goodlordie. > > no wonder. > > those things are strictly for the touristacos. > > >French kings and queens seem to have been married > all over the place. > > "any port in a storm" -- i forget the French for > that. > > >I wouldn't have missed walking down the aisle in a > tiara and veil, would you? > ;-) > > ahmmmm, tell you the truth, i've never really > thought of it before, never > having had the offer. > > let me check on it and get back to you on that. > > Mark Williams <[log in to unmask]> wrote: > > >You should look into the several books of Ray Van > Dam (Leadership and > Community in Late Antique Gaul) and Ralph W. > Mathisen (Ecclesiastical > Factionalism and Religious Controversy in > Fifth-Century Gaul). > > > the titles to these (esp. the latter) would seem to > suggest that, if they deal > with the actual laying out of sees & provinces, the > whole system was not > simply taken over from the Roman provincial > organisation of Diocletian (or > later). > > >Each has an extensive bibliography. > > good-o. just a few more things to put on the > reading list. > > Someone (sorry, i forget who) mentioned that > diocesean boundries were > determined by demographic (population) > considerations rather than geographic > ones. > > somehow this doesn't sound quite right to me. > > though i'm not sure why. > > christopher > > ********************************************************************** > To join the list, send the message: join > medieval-religion YOUR NAME > to: [log in to unmask] > To send a message to the list, address it to: > [log in to unmask] > To leave the list, send the message: leave > medieval-religion > to: [log in to unmask] > In order to report problems or to contact the list's > owners, write to: > [log in to unmask] > For further information, visit our web site: > http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/medieval-religion.html __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
