italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies Dear Ms. Ross, > Besides essays by Calvino and works by Buzzati and Primo Levi, can > anyone suggest any texts in Italian - either fiction or theoretical - > that deal with cyborg or posthuman bodies / the merging of bodies and > technological devices etc.? This is not a particularly popular theme in Italian culture, especially if you compare it with the English-speaking world. However, Antonio Caronia has written many books around the concept of cyborg and the metamorphoses of the body. A new edition of his _Il cyborg: saggio sull'uomo artificiale_ has been released last year by ShaKe (1st edition, 1985). Also of interest is _Il corpo virtuale_ (1996). The first chapter of the popular _La scienza della fantascienza_ by Renato Giovannoli (2001; 1st edition, 1982) deals with "Robot, cyborg e androidi". In 1999, Vincenzo Tagliasco published the _Dizionario degli esseri umani fantastici e artificiali_: it is little more than a heap of synopsis of stories and novels, but it carries also a large bibliography (alas, the data given are quite often vague or incorrect; the few references to Italian works do include mainly comics and movies). I believe that also _Athena cyborg. Per una geografia dell'espressione_ by Tiziana Villani (1996) could be of interest. As for the (science) fiction, I can suggest at least: _Il robot e il minotauro_ by Roberto Vacca (1963); _Picatrix_ by Valerio Evangelisti (1998); _Il cuore finto di DR_ and _Dream Box_ by Nicoletta Vallorani (1993 and 1998; highly derivative). Moreover, the _Ranxerox_ comics by Tamburini and Liberatore are a classic work.
