John, would that mean that "papal vicar" is not the same thing as "papal
legate" ?

seems like, in 12th c. France at least, the appointment to the latter position
entailed quite a bit of travel (as well as correspondance).

or am i suffering from yet another embarassing lack of knowledge ?

anything about this in Frances Newton's wonderful new study _The scriptorium
and library at Monte Cassino, 1058-1105_(Cambridge U.P., 1999) ?

which i have and haven't had a chance to look at, yet.
