medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture Re: Ars moriendi treatises Death and Burial in Medieval England (Christopher Daniell, 1997) does have a chapter entitled “From Death Bed to Remembrance,” which could be useful.  There is also an essay in The Place of the Dead (Gordan and Marshall, 2000) by Clive Burgess which looks at post-mortem monetary donations for the purposes of commemoration (chantry chapels and such, he has a similar article in Profit, Piety and the Professions I n Later medieval England (Hicks,1990) ). I seem to remember there was an also an article in Death in Towns (Bassett, 1992) which analyzed wills from London in terms of last wishes and their purpose.  Hope this helps.

Hi,

You may want to try Death and Burial in Medieval England...although I apologize for not knowing the author offhand as I lent the book to a fellow lover of death studies. It was published in the '90s or even 2000ish.

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture Learned List Members,

I have been reading Ars moriendi treatises in hopes of finding one that gives advice about how to bequeath goods in such a way as to increase the chances of the testator's salvation.  Sylvia Thrupp long ago mentioned that such advice was sometimes offered by these manuals on how to make a good Christian death.  So far, however, I have come up empty.  I am especially interested in English texts from the 15th century.  Does anyone know of any primary, or even secondary, sources that discuss the proper (Christian) disposal of goods in last wills and testaments?

Thanks,
