medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Today (19. September) is the feast day of:

Januarius (d. c. 305) Januarius was a bishop of Benevento and martyr. He
is most famous for the liquefaction of his blood on his three feast days
each year (today, the anniversary of his translatio on the 1st Saturday in
May, and 16. December--the anniversary of his saving Naples from volcanic
eruption). This miracle was first recorded in 1389.

Theodore of Canterbury (or of Tarsus) (d. 690) Theodore was a Greek (from
Tarsus), educated at Antioch and Constantinople, and professed as a monk.
While living in Rome, Theodore attracted the attention of Pope Vitalian,
who named him archbishop of Canterbury in 666. The 65-year-old Theodore
was ordained subdeacon, etc., then consecrated, and then shipped north.
Despite his age and lack of prior knowledge of England, Theodore proved to
be an extremely active archbishop, visiting most of the country, setting up
an important school at Canterbury, holding the first English synod, and
organizing the dioceses of England. Ted's body was still incorrupt in
1091, when it was translated; this seems to be the beginning of a real cult
of the saint.

Igor of Kiev (d. 1147) Igor was great prince of Kiev. A rebellion forced
him to resign. Igor then withdrew to a monastery, but ws killed by a mob
there during prayers. He is regarded as a martyr.

Albert of Liege (d. 1192 or 1193) Albert, born in c. 1166, was a son of
the count of Liege. He was elected bishop of Liege in 1191, but Emperor
Henry VI gave the diocese to someone else. Albert appealed to Rome and his
position as bishop was confirmed by the pope (and he was also named a
cardinal). So Albert was consecrated as bishop of Liege (the ceremony took
place in Rheims, because the anti-bishop held Liege), and was forthwith
murdered by three German knights from the emperor's household.
