THE HARLEQUIN PROJECT

I write to acquaint you with the details of this project, which includes the visit of Eugenio de' Giorgi to London (1-8 December 2002) and the performance of his one-man Commedia dell'Arte play Lo Sghignazzo di Arlecchino (5 p.m., Sunday December 8, Cockpit Theatre, City of Westminster College, Gateforth Street, London NW8 8EH, Marylebone tube), an International conference on "Harlequin versus Hamlet" - with contributions on the boundaries between theory and performance from scholars and practitioners from Britain and Europe (7-8 December, Fyvie Hall, University of Westminster, 309 Regent Street London),and a workshop by Eugenio de' Giorgi for student actors on the Commedia dell'Arte from five teaching institutions (2-7 December,6-8 pm, Portland Hall, University of Westminster).

Eugenio will also be giving two brief targeted workshops at the Cockpit Theatre (Westminster City College) and one at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama during the same week.
CALL FOR PAPERS
The conference will be at the Fyvie Hall between 10. a.m. and 6 p.m. on Saturday, December 7 and Sunday, 8 December, 10.a.m. -- 1 p.m. Contributions "on the boundaries between theory and performance" will be welcomed on a wide range of interpretations of the title. Comparisons, contrasts, similarities and performance outcomes between Hamlet and Harlequin from the Renaissance to present day performance, from academics, theatre historians, experienced actors, directors and practitioners would be appropriate, even demonstrations, acted sequences and the use of video evidence. Contributions already promised fit these broad parameters. Interpreting assistance where required between Italian and English will be available.

The project is supported in all three initiatives by a grant from the Province of Lombardy region in Italy, and late confirmation of this is the reason for the relatively short notice. Proposals for papers would be welcomed by the undersigned as urgently as possible. By E-mail would be best, but telephone numbers (message facilities) are also appended. A cut-off point for acceptances may have to be October 15, but please get in touch anyway, should you receive this information late.

The play will be performed in (Venetian) Italian but a programme giving the complete original text with an interleaved English translation will be available at £5. Admission to the performance will be free to students (who bring evidence) by programme to all others. Admission to the conference will be free to all interested, as will the workshop for students - for those selected by their institutions.

Eugenio de' Giorgi is a professional actor & director, a favoured pupil of Ferruccio Soleri (Strehler's Harlequin in the Servant of Two Masters) and probably one of the best two Harlequins performing today. He is artistic director of the Casa dell'Arlecchino theatre in Bergamo and the teatro Olmetto in central Milan. The play opens in Milan on October 3, 2002,and tours to Bergamo and Paris as well as London.

Please send an approximate title if offering a paper to the undersigned by E-mail before October 15. At present there will be no charges, no travel assistance and no catering (except a conference dinner on the evening of December 7 for conference speakers).
PERFORMANCE: Cockpit Theatre, 5 p.m. December 8, 2002. For reservations, please ring 020-7911, 5000, Ext 2068, (10-5) and give names of all in your party to Helena Scott. Students from participating Colleges, please bring ID. 180 places maximum.
If you are a student from Westminster, Central, Royal Holloway, Kingston or Guildhall and would like a place on the workshop, please contact your course leader without delay.
