University of Salford: Institute for Public Health Research and Policy

Chair in Public Health with particular reference to health and regeneration

Regeneration is changing the face of the North West of England. But what impact
does regeneration have on health, especially inequalities in health? And might
improved health facilitate regeneration?

Applications are invited to take the professorial lead on research and policy
development on this theme within the well-known Institute for Public Health Research
and Policy. The Professor will work closely with the Centre for Sustainable Urban and
Regional Futures at the University. The Cair will also work in partnership with the
Regional Development Agency, NHS and social care agencies, local government,
voluntary organisations, the private sector and local communities, in giving health a
high profile in plans for the North West.

Applicants must have a strong track record of academic publication and success
relevant to health and regeneration. Committment to a 'social determinants' approach
to public health is essential. The professor will be expected to take on research
students (the social sciences have ESRC recognition) and will contribute to teaching a
new Masters in Public Health and Society.

The post and its support are funded jointly by IPHRP and the NHS for three years. So
long as the person appointed has a proven record of obtaining substantial funding, the
appointment will be permanent.
