The appointment, which is to be filled as soon as possible and by mid October at the latest will carry out socio-behavioural research in support of infectious disease risk management in Mozambique and Bangladesh supported by DfID, UNICEF and WHO. The bulk of the work associated with this appointment will be centred on cholera research for Phase 1 of the collaboration in central Mozambique for which three years of initial funding is available. Suitable candidates are likely to hold a Social Science orientated PhD, have good experience of participatory methodologies, including experience of working with community-based approaches to health in Africa and/or Asia. They should empathise with the plight of the poor, be prepared to work between Mozambique and the North East of England with some visits to Bangladesh, and to work in both Portuguese and English. Applicants who already have a good command of the Portuguese Language and/or would be prepared to carry out some lecturing in development, environment, health or disaster management related topics at Northumbria University are particularly welcome. Disaster management and sustainable development at Northumbria centres around international research activities and postgraduate studies with longstanding strengths in developing world issues and more recent links with the UK emergency services.
