Provisional Programme
14 November 2002 - Olympic Day: Preparing for Athens 2004
This will be a highly interactive afternoon for all medical disciplines
aspiring to be or currently involved in Olympic sport. These sessions
provide an insight into the working of the British Olympic Association
in its preparations for the next Olympics. Cases are discussed in an
open forum with a "what would you do next" format. 50% of the cases are
unsolved so contribution from the delegates is strongly encouraged. If
you have a case of particular interest then please contact Dr Rod Jaques
on [log in to unmask] The day will finish on a political
note with a discussion on which sporting organisation is doing what?
Who is funding the regional centres of sport? Who is making the
decisions about appointments of medical personnel who will be working
for The EIS? This will be a useful session to update delegates

15 November 2002 - The Flexors of the Foot and Ankle
The lectures are self explanatory. The "Ask the surgeon" session has
been included to fuel some debate. When our athletes go for surgery to
the ankle and foot, who are the "best" surgeons to refer to? As
surgical techniques vary so much and as research is often not performed
on elite athletes, how do we ensure that we are doing our best for the
athlete by referring for a surgical opinion? The debate will be
stimulated by cases brought to the forum by those working with elite
athletes. A panel of surgeons will answer our questions and comment on
our opinions. The practical sessions in the afternoon will allow
delegates to practice basic diagnostic ultrasound under the guidance of
expert radiologists. The examination session will be useful to pick up
one or two of the finer parts of examination of the contractile tissues,
to therefore perfect your own diagnostic capabilities.
