We have been very fortunate in securing four excellent and well-known speakers to deliver the key papers. Prof. Peter Nelde (Catholic University, Brussels) Dr. Miquel Strubell (universitat Oberta, Barcelona, and formerly of the Language Policy Directorate of the Generalitat) Prof. Colin Williams (Cardiff University) Euan Reid (Institute of Education, London) To register on line: http://www.lang.ltsn.ac.uk/events/events_sc.html <http://www.lang.ltsn.ac.uk/events/events_sc.html> There will be no fee for the day's event, but places will be limited. So please register your intention to attend early. ii Coordinating Events for the European Day of Languages European Day of Languages, 26 September 2002 It's only seven weeks away and there will be a number of activities around the UK to mark the day. The BBC is planning a special week of programming and there will be special items on the BBC languages website. It is also expected that local radio stations (last year 48 came on board) will show some interest and will want to talk to regional contacts. If you are willing to act as a "spokesperson" for your area, please give your details to Teresa Tinsley ([log in to unmask]) at CILT. CILT will be coordinating a web- based 'European Day of Languages Box" which will include: a basic briefing sheet about the day; information about resources available to promote languages; language activities for different target audiences. They are also pursuing the idea of the multilingual stickers which seemed to be a great success with adults and youngsters alike last year - samples will be sent out via CILT Direct. A number of universities targeted their local communities last year, with taster courses and open doors to their language resource centres. We will again list activities on our web pages if you can let us know what you are doing (please email [log in to unmask]). Two final points: the Subject Centre Languages Box will be launched on the 26th at the Symposium in Southampton and we hope to attract the interest of the Times Educational Supplement so that schools and colleges will be alerted to the fact that they should contact their local university to come and talk about the benefits of language learning; if you haven't joined the National Languages Forum, a post- EYOL discussion group pulling together ideas on policy and implementation, it's at <http://www.mailbase.ac.uk/lists/natlangs-forum/> 2.
