I think there is a Norwegian custom from about the 19th century (and perhaps going back much further) of bringing your horses out on New Year's Day to drink from a well, interpreted as a remnant of some fertility ritual/belief. But I may need some time to verify this, since my books are in England, and I am in Norway and about to go on holiday!
