medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture Don't I recall that the 15th is the feast of S. Stephen Harding in Cistercian houses? The real "founder" of the Cistercians, an Englishman who appeared among the dispirited group some time after Robert of Molesme had left to return to his original abbey. Harding wrote a constitution for the little group and inspired them to hang on...and then Bernard et al. appeared and the rest is history. jw -----Original Message----- From: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture [mailto:[log in to unmask]]On Behalf Of Phyllis Jestice Sent: Monday, July 15, 2002 8:30 PM To: [log in to unmask] Subject: [M-R] saints of the day 16. July medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture Today (16. July) is the feast day of: Eustathius of Antioch (d. c. 337) Eustathius was bishop of Antioch, but fell foul of the Arians. As a result, he was denounced to the emperor as the father of a bastard child (he denied it), was deposed, and exiled. Helier (6th cent.) Helier is a martyr and the first saint of Jersey. He was a hermit from Belgium who lived in a cave on the island, and was killed by either pagans or robbers (or perhaps both). Tenenan (7th cent.) The British Tenenan became a priest and hermit near Leon (Brittany). Ultimately he became bishop at Leon. His relics were venerated for a long time at his hermitage of Ploabennec. Plechelm (8th cent.) Plechelm was a Northumbrian missionary. He went to Rome on pilgrimage, was consecrated bishop there (although it's possible that he was consecrated by Willibrord), and proceeded with two companions to work in the Meuse valley (Netherlands). Like more famous missionaries of the time, Plechelm had Carolingian support, including the endowment of a church and monastery at Roermond. Dr. Phyllis G.
