medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Today (26. July) is the feast day of:

Anne and Joachim (1st cent.) The parents of the Virgin Mary. They first
appear in the second-century gospel of James. According to legend, the
couple had been unable to produce a child, but after angelic intervention
they miraculously procreated the BVM when they met and embraced at the
Golden Gate of Jerusalem. The cult of A and J really took off in the
twelfth century, and Anne's cult only became a universal feast in 1584.
The cult of Joachim was authorized by Julius II, suppressed by Pius V, and
restored by Gregory XV.

Erastus of Corinth (1st cent.) Erastus was converted by Paul, and after
that traveled with Timothy. He became bishop of Philippi (probably the one
in Macedon, although an eastern tradition says it was the one in
Palestine), where he is supposed to have been martyred.

Simeon of Padolirone (the Armenian) (d. 1016) Simeon, an Armenian holy
man, went on an extended pilgrimage to Jerusalem, Rome, Compostella, and
Tours, apparently working many miracles en route. Finally he settled at
the Cluniac priory of Padolirone near Padua. He was canonized by Benedict
VIII (1012-24), which suggests that Simeon must have made a pretty big
splash at the time. I'd love to know more about him.
