International Centre for Health and Society 2002 Seminar Series 10 July, 5pm Professor Don Nutbeam Head of Public Health, Department of Health 'Tackling health inequalities: what is the government doing?' RSVP attendance essential Abstract The Independent Inquiry into Inequalities and Health (1998) provided a comprehensive analysis of the extent and causes of health inequalities, as well as recommending actions that have the potential to reduce inequalities in health. This presentation will describe government action to address health inequalities since publication of the Independent Inquiry report. It will refer to the difficulties of achieving action across government, and the challenge of converting fragile evidence into defensible policies and programmes. During the previous ten years Don Nutbeam was Professor of Public Health, Associate Dean of Medicine and Head of the School of Public Health and Community Medicine at the University of Sydney in Australia. He returned to the UK in October 2000 to take up the position of Head of Public Health in the Department of Health. In this role he is responsible for leading work within the Department and across government on addressing health inequalities, as well as oversight of policy on tobacco control and substance misuse, the prevention of heart disease and cancer, and sexual health promotion. He is also responsible for public health workforce development, and related research and information strategies. He is a Visiting Professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. NB.
