For this and other queries about the prices of old books I'd try Phillip
J. Pirages, the bookseller who now lives in McMinnville, Oregon, but still
exhibits every year at Kalamazoo. His prices do not strike me as on the
low side, but what do I know . . . I don't have his e-mail handy, but his
number is (800) 962-6666. He bought S.K. Heninger's collection and is a
very, very nice guy. If anybody knows what a 1758 Spenser costs do let me
know--I just gave mine to Arthur Kinney's center at Amherst. The library
up there can't do evaluations but I'd love to have a figure to give the
IRS and I don't want to ask Phil when there's no way that I could sell him
my copy (what with my having stupidly *given* it to Arthur, who often has
that effect on people). Phil has recently decided to see other than
pristine copies--in other words books that people on this list might be
interested in but that aren't for collectors of bindings and rarities, so
he's worth knowing about. Anne.
