medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Today (30. June) is the feast day of:

The Martyrs of Rome (1st cent.) This feast honoring the martyrs of Nero's
persecution has been celebrated on the day following the feast of SS Peter
and Paul since 1969.

Martial of Limoges (3rd cent.; unless of course you agree with Adhemar of
Chabannes that he was one Jesus' original disciples and should have full
apostolic status) The most likely legend of Martial is that he was bishop
of Limoges beginning in c. 250 and a very successful evangelist of
Aquitaine.

George the Hagiorite (d. 1065) George was an aristocrat from Georgia (the
Black Sea one). He was educated at Constantinople, but returned home to
become a monk. After a few years he went on to Palestine, where he began
the task of translating the main Greek religious treatises into Georgian.
Most of this task was carried out on Mt. Athos, where he became a famed
supporter of orthodoxy.

Theobald of Provins (d. 1066) Theobald was a member of the comital family
of Champagne. He decided to become a hermit, though, and with a companion
(Walter) went to Pettingen (Luxembourg) and settled down to the eremitical
life. Since they had no other marketable skills, the two hired themselves
out as day laborers in the nearby villages. They went on a series of
pilgrimages and eventually settled at Salanigo (Italy).  Walter died there;
Theobald became a priest, and a community gathered around him (which became
Camaldolese). Pope Alexander III canonized Theobald in 1073.
