FASHION AND THE APPLIED ARTS

Courtauld History of Dress Association

Annual Conference

Friday 26th and Saturday 27th July 2002

Kenneth Clark Lecture Theatre

Courtauld Institute of Art

Somerset House

Strand, London  WC2

This year’s CHODA conference explores fashion in the broader context of the applied arts.  Papers will address the relationship between fashion and architecture, interiors, furniture and furnishings, jewellery, ceramics and textiles.  A permeating theme will be the ‘lifestyling’ of fashion and the fashionable lifestyle.

Our speakers - academics, students, curators and researchers - have adopted different approaches to this subject, reflecting their various areas of expertise or professional backgrounds.  Hence some will focus on fashionable clothing whilst others will discuss their subject in the context of the fashion industry.  Several papers will discuss the display of fashion and applied arts in museums.

The conference will be of interest to those studying or researching dress, applied and decorative arts, or indeed design history.  It will also be of interest to those working with museum collections.

Please address all enquiries to:
