A question has recently arisen on the Scottish Place-Name forum about the several places in Scotland called Cluny or Clunie, generally thought to derive from Gaelic _cluainn_ 'meadow'. Reference was also made to Cluny, Saone-et-Loire, France. Could any list member assist with the earliest known form of this place-name (or does anyone have a Dictionnaire Toponymique to hand which might suggest an etymology for this name)?

Thanks,

Henry Gough-Cooper
