I agree with Chris, and had forgotten (even if I ever knew), how narrow the intention was. Certainly from the use that is made of it there appears to be a need for the wider forum, as it is (on the whole) well used by colleagues for a whole range of professional matters which concern them and interest many of us. To confine it to such a narrow remit would, I suggest, limit its use to very little. Perhaps two lists, one as Penny defines it, and the other for the wide range of stuff which may only have a small relationship to 'implementation of the internet in public libraries'. Things have moved on since the list was set up, so perhaps a review should take place.
What have you opened here Penny? And how often are people swamped?

Am I alone in being somewhat disconcerted by the narrow definition of the purpose of this list ("a forum for discussion of the issues arising from implementing the Internet in public libraries")?  As a relatively late comer to it I was not, to be honest, aware of how narrow it was and had assumed that this was a forum to seek advice and exchange experiences on a much wider range of public library issues.  That is certainly how I, and others, have been using it  - and invaluable it is too.  It seems to me (or am I being naive?) that either we need to redefine the list's purpose more broadly or set up a new one that serves the more general purposes for which we have been using it.  (Being pretty ignorant about what goes on under the bonnet, I am NOT volunteering!)

Dear list members

concern has been expressed that some emails are being posted to the
lis-pub-libs mail list which do not address the purpose for which the list
has been set up.  I'm keen that people join the list, and am therefore
concerned if members start to feel swamped (oops - its that word again) by
inappropriate emails, and (worse case scenario) leave the list.
I am therefore sending a gentle reminder regarding the purpose of the list
and some basic 'etiquette' regarding the sending of promotional emails....

*lis-pub-libs is a forum for discussion of the issues arising from
implementing the Internet in public libraries. An opportunity for advice and
experiences to be exchanged*.

*Promotional messages should only be posted if they are related to the
subject or purpose of that list, and are likely to benefit or interest list
members.  The sender of a promotional message must seek the permission of
the list owner before posting.*

[For your information - only members of the list can post messages,
non-members cannot].

Many thanks for your co-operation. I hope you all continue to enjoy being a
member of this list, and gain benefit from sharing your ideas and knowledge
with other members.
