Baroness Ashton will address the conference on Wednesday 26 June. Keynote speakers include Ushi Felix, Vanessa Davies and David Crystal. A number of £50 discounts are available to staff who are employed on a part-time or hourly paid basis, as well as technical and support staff. VDML WORKSHOP : CREATING A VIRTUAL DEPARTMENT, 13 June 2002, UNIVERSITY COLLEGE LONDON As part of the Materials Bank Project, the Subject Centre is able to sponsor 6 colleagues teaching minority languages to attend the following event: Creating a Virtual Department Workshop Thursday, June 13th, 2002. 10:30-16:00 University College London. LINGUISTICS EVENT : LINGUISTICS AND THE WEB, 04 July 2002, UNIVERSITY OF THE WEST OF ENGLAND, BRISTOL This event will demonstrate various uses of the web for the teaching and learning of linguistics, discuss the issues surrounding the use of the web and give participants the chance to explore for themselves web-based linguistics teaching and learning resources. Full details available from the Subject Centre website at: http://www.lang.ltsn.ac.uk/events/linguwe 5. 2nd EYL SYMPOSIUM, 26 September 2002, UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHAMPTON 2nd Southampton Symposium to celebrate the European Day of Languages COMPETING FOR SPACE: Can immigrant and indigenous linguistic minorities coexist? 26 September 2002 University of Southampton After the highly successful first symposium, The End of Babel?, held last year, Southampton University's School of Modern Languages and the Subject Centre for Language, Linguistics and Area Studies will once again be hosting a day symposium on a current topical language issue. We have been very fortunate in securing four excellent and well-known speakers to deliver the key papers. NWCL RESEARCH TRAINING PROGRAMME AUTUMN 2002 The North West Centre for Linguistics announces its 2nd (Autumn) Research Training Programme 2-13 September 2002 : two weeks of courses in theoretical and applied linguistics and research methodology for postgraduate students - 5-day courses on : phonetics, phonology, language and education, textual analysis - afternoon sessions include: Using Corpora, Methods in Conversational Analysis, Single Case Studies, Using Experimental Data, Using Historical Data, Historical Pragmatics SPONSORSHIP available for UK Students (see website for details : http://www.nwcl.salford.ac.uk/research.htm) This programme will be limited to 45 students per week.
