1.    2002 CONFERENCE : SETTING THE AGENDA, 24-26 JUNE 2002,
Manchester Conference Centre - DISCOUNTED PLACES available

It is still possible to register for the Subject Centre/CILT conference: Setting
the Agenda-Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies in Higher Education
which takes place from 24 to 26 June 2002. Baroness Ashton will address
the conference on Wednesday 26 June. Keynote speakers include Ushi
Felix, Vanessa Davies and David Crystal. More information on the conference
including a provisional programme and abstracts can be found at
http://www.cilt.org.uk/cpd/HE2002.htm. A number of £50 discounts are
available to staff who are employed on a part-time or hourly paid basis, as
well as technical and support staff. Discounts can be applied to any of the
available delegate rates. Only one discounted place will be allocated to any

of discounted places.

2.    C & IT RESOURCES INFORMATION DAY, 12 June 2002, UNIVERSITY
OF HULL

The Subject Centre is holding this free event to give you the opportunity to
find out about the C & IT resources and services we offer and to try out
recommended web-based materials and softward on CD- and DVD-ROM in

3.    VDML WORKSHOP : CREATING A VIRTUAL DEPARTMENT, 13 June
2002, UNIVERSITY COLLEGE LONDON

As part of the Materials Bank Project, the Subject Centre is able to sponsor
6 colleagues teaching minority languages to attend the following event:

Creating a Virtual Department Workshop
Thursday, June 13th, 2002. 10:30-16:00 University College London. See:

What you can expect:
- a demonstration of new ways of working developed by language
teachers - guidelines for creating a similar resource to supplement
classroom teaching - hands-on experience of the software used.

Places will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. To qualify, please

4.    LINGUISTICS EVENT : LINGUISTICS AND THE WEB, 04 July 2002,
UNIVERSITY OF THE WEST OF ENGLAND, BRISTOL

This event will demonstrate various uses of the web for the teaching and
learning of linguistics, discuss the issues surrounding the use of the web and
give participants the chance to explore for themselves web-based linguistics

5.    2nd EYL SYMPOSIUM, 26 September 2002, UNIVERSITY OF
SOUTHAMPTON

2nd Southampton Symposium to celebrate the European Day of Languages

                                   COMPETING FOR SPACE:
            Can immigrant and indigenous linguistic minorities
            coexist?

After the highly successful first symposium, The End of Babel?, held last
year, Southampton University's School of Modern Languages and the Subject
Centre for Language, Linguistics and Area Studies will once again be hosting
a day symposium on a current topical language issue. We have been very
fortunate in securing four excellent and well-known speakers to deliver the
key papers. Prof. Peter Nelde (Catholic University, Brussels) Dr. Miquel
Strubell (universitat Oberta, Barcelona, and formerly of the Language Policy
Directorate of the Generalitat) Prof. Colin Williams (Cardiff University) Euan

6.    NWCL RESEARCH TRAINING PROGRAMME AUTUMN 2002

The North West Centre for Linguistics announces its 2nd (Autumn) Research
Training Programme 2-13 September 2002 : two weeks of courses in
theoretical and applied linguistics and research methodology for postgraduate
students - 5-day courses on : phonetics, phonology, language and education,
textual analysis - afternoon sessions include: Using Corpora, Methods in
Conversational Analysis, Single Case Studies, Using Experimental Data,
Using Historical Data, Historical Pragmatics SPONSORSHIP available for UK
Students (see website for details :

to 45 students per week.
