Dear all

a few weeks ago I asked lists for information about the above
specifically about practical systems for providing valid reliable
indicators. Surprisingly few responses - but here is what I was told
about so far:...

David Collins told me about - Pinderfields and Pontefract Trust,
Wakefield, West Yorkshire - (Mid Yorkshire Trust from 1 April)
have system whereby the following are monitored

> Pressure sore prevalence and incidence
> Hospital acquired infection
> Record keeping
> Discharge planning
> Information provided to patients and families
> Individualised care planning
> Pain assessment and management
> Nutrition
> Privacy and dignity
> Rest and sleep
> Medicine management and administration
> care and prevention of DVT
> Patients at risk from falling
> Preceptorship and clinical supervision
>
> The areas were distilled from a survey of all nurse in Trust. They
> were asked to identify the areas we should measure in order to
be able to describe the quality of nursing care. In-house audit
system we designed. 14 indicators are measured through a series
of audits (team of about 100 nurses carryout audits). Results are
handled in SPSS. Have nearly two years of data, usually an
annual audit for each indicator unless there are problems.
Standard format for audit: Indicator area - standard statement -
questions to answer yes or no to assess compliance with
standard. High scores used as beacon wards on that indicator.
Low scores have action plan for improvement and re-audit before
next annual cycle. System called 'Nursing Charter'.

You may be interested in the Newcastle Satisfaction with Nursing
Scale a survey instrument, developed here at the University of
Newcastle. I attach a file of references to relevant papers. The
questionnaire itself may be downloaded from

We are currently updating the manual to accommodate the latest
version of Epi-Info. Once the update is complete, it too will be
available to download from the web site above.

Gail Powell-Cope directed me to the American Nurses Association
Quality Indicators Project.

There is also work done by the UK Royal College of Nursing on a
system called QUALPACS and the Dynamic Standard Setting
Project.

Thanks for your help - will be pleased to hear about any other
relevant work in this area
