medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Today (17. April) is the feast day of:

Wando (d. 756) Wando was born probably in Germany late in the seventh
century. He entered the monastery of Fontanelle in the diocese of Rouen,
becoming abbot in 716. However, he was banished just a few months after
entering his office, and was only able to return over 20 years later.
After his return, Wando brought Fontenelle to a high bloom.

Robert of Chaise-Dieu (d. 1067) Robert of Turlande was from the Auvergne
(France) After living for several years as a monk of Cluny, Robert became
a hermit near Brioude. A community of hermits grew around his retreat,
developing into time into the abbey of Chaise-Dieu, with Robert as first
abbot. Chaise-Dieu developed into a major congregation with over 300
abbeys and priories in France, Italy, and Spain. Robert was canonized
within three years of his death.

Gervin of Oudenburg (d. 1107) Gervin lived as a hermit at various places,
including Oudenburg in western Flanders. The monks of the Benedictine
monastery there elected Gervin their abbot in 1095. After 10 years he
abdicated and returned to his hermitage.

Bartholomew of Simeri (d. 1130) Bartholomew organized the Greek
monasticism in Calabria and Sicily, himself living a life of great
asceticism.

Jacobo Cinthier of Cerqueto (d. 1367) (blessed) Jacobo was born in Umbria
in c. 1294, and entered the Augustinian order in c. 1312. He became one of
the most important preachers of the order, highly honored for his love of
prayer and great humility. He was beatified in 1895.
