Orality and literacy in Italian culture
Friday 10 and Saturday 11 May 2002
at the Institute of Romance Studies, Senate House,
University of London
Organisers: Michael Caesar (University of Birmingham) and Marina
Spunta (University of Leicester)
Sponsored by: The Society for Italian Studies
outThis interdisciplinary conference provides an opportunity
to take stock of recent and ongoing research in topics which
straddle the boundaries between 'oral' and 'written' cultures in
Italy and Italian-speaking communities, and which explore
critically the relation between them. Working across a wide
chronological span and from the multiple perspectives of literary
studies, semiotics, cultural history, anthropology, dialect studies
and linguistics, the twenty-six papers have been grouped within
the following broad thematic areas:
out- Orality, literacy and performativity in early modern
Italian women authors
out- Voice and performance in Dante
out- The written, the not-written and popular culture
out- Orality and the fixity of the written
out- Dialect, tradition and the oral
out- The presence of the oral in twentieth-century writing
out- Orality and narration
out- Theatre and performance
