NORDIC-SCOTTISH CONFERENCE RURAL DEVELOPMENT - LEARNING ACROSS THE NORTH To be held in Inverness, capital of the Scottish Highlands, on Monday May 27 and Tuesday May 28, 2002 You are invited to attend a special conference being held in the Scottish Highlands. The aim of the conference is to share good practice in rural development and to strengthen rural research networks across the Nordic-Scottish countries. The conference will bring together those involved in rural development research, policy and practice, from the Nordic countries and Scotland. It will provide a forum to enable co-operation and exchange of ideas on rural development, in line with the recently launched Nordic-Scottish Action Plan. It will also provide an opportunity to develop proposals for future Scottish-Nordic research projects which help to identify and share good practice in the field of rural development. The conference will focus around five key themes: · Local governance and empowerment of rural communities · Communications and community involvement · Innovation in rural services · Wider use of the countryside · Developing the rural economy and building on natural assets On the second day of the conference, Tuesday May 28, there will be an important opportunity for those interested in developing research proposals on the five key themes, to meet and develop their ideas. The intention will be to prepare trans-national proposals for each theme, for submission to relevant funding programmes, including Interreg. Each theme will have a co-ordinator, who will work with interested parties prior to and during the conference. The conference is organised by The Arkleton Centre for Rural Development Research, University of Aberdeen, as part of their Nordic-Scottish Rural Transfer Network. It is supported by The Scottish Executive, The Forestry Commission, Highlands and Islands Enterprise and The Highland Council. The partners include The Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations and The University of the Highlands and Islands Millennium Institute. The conference programme, booking form, accommodation and travel options are available on the Arkleton website: www.abdn.ac.uk/arkleton, or from the conference organiser.
